Ten years ago, Politecnico di Milano inaugurated PoliFab, a state-of-the-art laboratory dedicated to micro and nanoelectronics. Located in the Leonardo Campus, PoliFab has become a center of excellence for research and technological development, providing advanced infrastructure and support to students, researchers, startups, and companies.
Over the past ten years, PoliFab has expanded its capabilities, involving five departments of the Politecnico: Physics; Electronics, Information and Bioengineering; Civil and Environmental Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering. The facility is designed as an open infrastructure, accessible to a wide scientific and industrial community.
In 2025, PoliFab celebrated its tenth anniversary with an event at the Leonardo campus, attended by university authorities, companies, and startups. During the event, achievements were presented, and future prospects were discussed, including the move to the new Innovation Hub in Bovisa.
PoliFab features a cleanroom with ISO 6 and 8 classes, covering over 600 square meters, capable of hosting wafers up to 200 mm. The facility supports a wide range of processes, including lithography, deposition, etching, characterization, and back-end.
In recent years, through collaboration with STMicroelectronics, the cleanroom has been expanded with an additional 210 m² to accommodate new tools and joint projects in MEMS, power electronics, microcontrollers, and galvanic isolation.
The partnership with STMicroelectronics has been a driving force for innovation at PoliFab, enabling the development of advanced technologies and the rapid transfer of know-how between research and industry. This collaboration has strengthened PoliFab's role as a reference point in the Italian technological landscape.
Looking ahead, PoliFab is preparing to move to the new Innovation Hub in Bovisa, a step that will further expand its capabilities and solidify its leadership role in the technological innovation ecosystem. With continued commitment to research and development, PoliFab is ready to tackle the technological challenges of the next decade.
